Cameroonians went to the polls on Sunday, October 12, 2025, to vote in a presidential election where the country’s 92-year-old incumbent president, Paul Biya, who has been in power for 43 years, is seeking an eighth term.

Ahead of the election, a bizarre report surfaced claiming that the face of Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah had appeared on the electoral roll.

According to Yahoo News, several media outlets that fact-checked the development confirmed that the Liverpool striker’s image is indeed listed as a voter at the Ngaoundéré III polling station.

Cameroon holds presidential election, Biya seeks to extend four-decade iron grip

This was further verified on the official website of ELECAM, Cameroon’s electoral management body.

The name used along with the picture matches the first letters of the "AZERTY" keyboard.

The incident has sparked widespread social media commentary, with some users reacting humorously while others have raised concerns about electoral fraud and the reliability of the voter register.

ELECAM has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, as vote counting continues for the election in which 12 candidates are challenging the incumbent president.

In Cameroon’s last presidential election in October 2018, Biya won with 71% of the vote amid allegations of fraud and protests.

Per the country’s constitution, the electoral commission is expected to announce provisional results within 15 days.

While some analysts project a high likelihood of Biya’s victory, reports indicate that former minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary is showing strong prospects as a leading opposition candidate.
