The problem with Africa is that, the laws studied in schools are foreign. And the lawyers are too lazy to study ournative laws and modify them for our use. They just chew and pour foreign laws and impose them on us. Sam Jona is spot on. The government should prioritize STEM education and give contracts to people with scientific mind. Scholarships should be given to more STEM students because the development of the country depends on them. Do you know why China is developing fo fast. It's leaders are engineers and mathematicians!

When a lawyer candidate knows his/her opponent(s) are not lawyers, then they use it as a trump card or to let voters know that because he/she is a lawyer, he/she is the best person to be voted for. More and more are becoming lawyers because of politics so that they become rich quickly.

The problem is deeper than what he is highlighting. The society is a very laid back one with many individuals having low horizon aspirations. A big black tainted car and a big house, don't worry wether the house is in a place where no tarred streets exist. You just have to have the capacity to show up at funerals and being seen to be rolling with politicians. That is the average Ghanians sense of great achievement. In 2025, our politics touts mundane road easement as a flyover. Ghana has just slipped back. It all started at the end of the 1970s, the Liman administration sought to recover it, given the many accomplished individuals who were in the government. For example the the then Attorney General resigned from office back to private practice when a cabinet reshuffle took him to Local Govt. The reason for being in Govt was that he wanted to be the AG. He was one of Ghana best lawyers at the time. The 1982 coup with the social disorder it promoted and the formation of the NDC that allowed and promoted a lot of political opportunism have all been part of what this country is today. The NPPs tantrums like a bunch of kids are part of the problems. It is a real shame to see this country decline in quality of life and aspiration.

Liman was clear about what devaluation could do the economy and so when IMF staffed went to Sekondi to meet at the Residency while he was a tour of the Western Region he flatly told them that was not the way to get the economy going. And think about it why did World Bank and IMF introduce Structural Adjustment as major shift in policy model in Ankara in 1979.? I must admit it was a difficult period immediately after the 1979 revolution.

I wonder how many lawyers can be found in Japan, China, Germany, Singapore, etc. When you train more lawyers than scientists, then be rest assured that corruption will increase, because most enter into politics and start stealing state resources or most become litigants, exploiting the law for their own benefits. It was his reaction to the boycott by the GBA of the constitutional Assembly and the threatened boycott by the NPP of the first parliamentary election. Half of the leaders of the NPP from Da Rocha down except Adu Boahen were lawyers. How have we fared? Bad I guess, if you consider that the now well-advanced Rwanda was beginning to start a pogrom on itself in a self-destructive genocidal war.

It is instructive to know that there are engineers and other STEM professional among the students lawyers and those called to the bar.

This is a great observation. However, it is all because of dubious means of becoming rich as a lawyer politician. Otherwise, there are no big corporate cases like in other developed countries where lawyers can become rich within short periods of time for handling corporate cases. In Ghana, it is stealing goats or fowls, which do not make lawyers rich. However, people go into the law profession to be able to steal their way through the system by corruption. Ghana needs more engineers and technicians.

This tragetry unfortunately won't change anytime soon. China and all these countries didn't use lawyers to develop their country but rather science and technology that can compete on the global state.

I asked the staff there if I bought say I gigabyte what would it do? Could I print 500 pages of A4, makes two hour of Skype, etc. Nobody could give me answer. Infact many of them did not end know what a BYTE is. When I told them is eight binary digits representing a character they were shocked to hear. Common sense could have let Vodaphone give them training to be able to understand how much 1 gigabyte could do. Just as you can tell now far can certain motorized equipment run on a mile of fuel. But a country that has no regard for science many things are done with no reasoned knowledge. That is Ghana.

I do agree with him in part. We need to invest in Basic and applied research facilities where the smartest people go to trouble their brains for invention.
Secondly we need to implement an research lab where discoveries and break throughs are turned into realities for human consumptions. If we can invest up to 15% of our GDP in research and development we will advance very fast just like what the chinese have done.
Subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology and Mathematics should be emphasized. Even Elon Musk has said it if you have an engineering problem you cannot solve you consult Physics and Mathematics.

We should also look into not retiring prematurely our hard working scientist. I had my greatest breakthrough when I turned 65 years. I am still working in the Lab surrounded by youngest brains who I mentor.

The financial resources used in producing this large number of lawyers could be diverted to educating students in the natural sciences. We definitely do not need all these lawyers.
