The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has said there is no justification for former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to avoid accountability if questions have been raised about his conduct while in public office.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, scrutiny and accountability are obligations that apply to all public officials, whether they are still in office or not.

“Ken Ofori-Atta like all public officials, are subject to scrutiny so whether you are in government or outside government, once you have served in public office, you must be open to scrutiny and accountability,” he said during his appearance on the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

He argued that several former public officials, including those who served under President John Dramani Mahama’s first term, were subjected to investigations and judicial processes, noting that Ofori-Atta was part of government during that period.

“There are many public officials, including some who served under President Mahama during his first tenure, who were subjected to all manner of judicial processes with a view to exacting accountability from them and Ken Ofori-Atta was in government when that happened,” he explained.

He, therefore, questioned why the former finance minister should seek to avoid similar scrutiny.

Kwakye Ofosu further cited President Mahama himself as an example of openness to investigations, stressing that accountability processes do not automatically imply wrongdoing.

“So, I see no reason why he should seek to evade accountability when similar questions are raised.

“Indeed, President Mahama himself was a subject of investigations and he subjected himself to investigations. He was interviewed by the Special Prosecutor,” he noted.

He explained that after investigations into President Mahama, no wrongdoing was established.

“Eventually, it was found that the allegations were unfounded and nothing untoward had happened in that particular matter, so, he is walking a free man,” he stated.

Touching on the ongoing issues surrounding Ken Ofori-Atta, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the former minister should cooperate fully with investigators if he is confident of his innocence.

“So, if Ken Ofori-Atta is confident that indeed he has done nothing untoward, I think that he should avail himself to the appropriate authorities to carry out their investigations. The Attorney General has indicated that he has sent a formal request to the authorities in the United States of America who are processing it,” Kwakye Ofosu emphasised.

According to him, developments surrounding the matter have also drawn the attention of US immigration authorities.

The minister added that the former finance minister is expected to appear in court later in January 2026.

“Along the line, because of the concerns raised by the Ghanaian government, I think that his visa was revoked which then made it an issue for ICE. So, he's currently in detention. We are aware that on the 20th of this month [January] he will be appearing in court. Depending on the outcome of the court proceedings, I think that the appropriate steps will be taken,” he stated.

Kwakye Ofosu concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to accountability.

“The Ghanaian government is invested in holding all public officials to account and if the investigative authorities believe that there's a basis to investigate, I think they should be encouraged to carry out that investigation,” he concluded.
