The first two weeks of January 2026 have seen a series of fatal road accidents across the country, leaving scores of people dead, with many suffering various degrees of injuries.

From head-on collisions, tyre bursts, and overturning of a fire tender en route to a fire scene in Buipe in the Savannah Region, these incidents highlight the country's ongoing road safety challenges.

One dead, 37 injured in Mankrong accident on Accra-Kumasi Highway

This GhanaWeb article chronicles some of the road accidents reported in Ghana in the first few days of January 2026.

Eastern Region

On January 11, 2026, one person died and at least 37 others sustained injuries following a fatal road traffic accident at Mankrong on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The incident involved a 40-seater Zhong Tong bus and a Man Diesel truck. Both vehicles were reportedly in motion at the time of the collision.

And then on January 12, 2026, a tragic crash occurred on the Kibi–Suhum Road when a saloon car’s tyre burst, causing it to overturn.

One person was killed, while three others sustained injuries.

Ashanti Region

Also on January 12, 2026, a fiery collision involving a saloon car, trailer, and mini truck occurred near Offinso Old Town.

Two people died in the blaze, and two others were injured.

Earlier on January 5, 2026, a motorcyclist was killed instantly at Suame-Maakro after being trapped and pulled under a trailer loaded with soya beans.

Eyewitnesses described the accident as gruesome, blaming it on the poor state of the road.

On January 12, 2026, a head-on collision between a Sprinter bus and a truck on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway left at least seven people dead, and 18 others severally injured.



On January 13, 2026, a motorcyclist died after colliding with a truck near Anyaa Market.

Savannah Region

Five officers of the Ghana National Fire Service were injured when their fire engine overturned while responding to a fire outbreak at Buipe on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

No fatalities were recorded.

According to the National Road Safety Authority, 1,937 people lost their lives in road crashes across the country between January and August 2025.

Road safety experts continue to stress the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and public education campaigns to prevent further tragedies in 2026.
