You may never have believed the truth of such a story had it never been published in a newspaper, but as the Daily Graphic reported on Tuesday, October 4, 1994, a rodent was once instrumental in the delays in the payments of salaries at Ghana’s premier university.
As reported in the paper, a snippet of which has been re-shared recently, the activities of a mouse led to what became delays in the payments of salaries of staff of the University of Ghana.
The report, titled, ‘Mouse halts payments of salaries at Legon,’ the report stated that a source had told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the rodent crept into the machine that was used to process salaries.
“A mouse has haled the payment of the September salaries of the workers of the University of Ghana, Legon.
“A source at the finance office told the Ghana News Agency in Accra that a mouse crept into a computer which was being used in handling the preparation of the salaries of the university and ate up certain components,” the report stated.
It added further that the reason this had stalled the payments of salaries was because the mouse was eventually found dead in the machine.
“When the computer was switched on, it could not function and therefore a computer mechanic was called in, and when he opened the computer for repairs, a mouse was found dead through electrocution,” it further added.
Ultimately, the situation was resolved and in an interview with the Daily Graphic in 1994, an unnamed spokesman of the University of Ghana said “the finance office has however completed work on the voucher, and that payment of September salaries would be effected.”
