The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has destroyed a large consignment of opioid drugs following authorisation from the Tema High Court.
The drugs were intercepted at the Tema Port in December 2025 during a joint inspection conducted by the FDA, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
According to authorities, the seized consignment contained opioid pharmaceutical products mixed with other substances, which raised concerns about possible illicit trafficking.
Investigations into the shipment also revealed multiple documentation irregularities, pointing to breaches in cargo monitoring and regulatory requirements.
Following the findings, the FDA and the GRA jointly applied to the Tema High Court for approval to dispose of the drugs.
The court subsequently granted the request and directed the FDA to destroy the consignment in accordance with Section 132(2) of the Public Health Act.
