Charles Owusu (L) has cautioned President Mahama (R) over LGBTQ issues
A 2024 independent parliamentary candidate for Nkoranza, Rev Charles Owusu, has warned President John Dramani Mahama that Ghanaians will hold him accountable in the 2028 Election if he fails to fulfill his campaign promises regarding LGBTQ+ issues.
Speaking on Peace FM on January 18, 2026, Rev Owusu said the conversations and commitments made by the president during his campaign were different from what is being delivered in office.

“If President Mahama fails to fulfill his promise on the LGBTQ+ issues, we will show him in 2028, which is just around the corner.
“I can’t conclude as to whether he will do it or not since he hasn’t completed his full term but the conversations we are having now is entirely different from what they promised Ghanaians. You think you can joke with us?... If he fails to honor that promise, he will hear from Ghanaians,” he said.
According to him, Ghanaians must put an end to the practice of politicians making campaign promises in opposition but refusing to fulfill them once in power.
He emphasised that repeated unfulfilled promises by public officials undermine trust, warning that Ghanaians will act if commitments are ignored.
“It is high time we put a stop to instances where people make promises and fail to honor them once they get power and resort to giving excuses,” he stated.
Owusu, who identifies as a Christian voter, explained that his decision to support Mahama in the last elections was influenced by the president’s assurances to religious leaders.

“I voted for Mahama because of the things he told the clergy on the LGBTQ+ matter which influenced my voting decision. I’m happy I voted for him because of his faith… With all due respect to the president, he shouldn’t joke with Christians who are 72.1% in the country. You can’t play with us,” he added.
