Legendary Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has opened up about the personal motivation that fuelled his journey to becoming the Black Stars' all-time leading goalscorer, revealing a self-imposed pressure to deliver for the nation's fans every time he stepped onto the pitch.

Gyan, who scored 51 goals in 109 appearances for Ghana and is Africa's top scorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals, explained that he cultivated a mindset of unwavering expectation.

"When I used to play for Ghana, obviously, people expected you to score goals because that is what the fans wanted. I created that for myself to be consistent in my goal-scoring, so they knew that anytime Ghana plays, they knew I would score," he said.

This internal standard became a defining ritual throughout his 20-year international career, which included three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014).

"Anytime I don't score, then there is a problem. So anytime I am going into a game, I pray, and I ask God help me give the fans what they want," he admitted.

The 40-year-old icon acknowledged the intense duality of being the team's focal point.

"The people have confidence in me that I can score at any time, so when I don't score, I am the worst player, but when I score, I am the best player," Gyan reflected, highlighting the fine line between hero and villain in the eyes of expectant supporters.

Gyan's self-driven pressure translated into historic achievements. Beyond his national record, his six World Cup goals,” including memorable strikes against the Czech Republic in 2006 and a last-minute winner against the USA in 2010, cemented his status as one of Africa's greatest-ever forwards.

His openness provides a rare glimpse into the psychological discipline required to sustain excellence at the highest level of international football.
