It stays out of [the state’s] legal jurisdiction and prevents the Akosua Serwaa/Odo Broni nonsense. It is not because the state has failed them or provides no structures. It is what it is because it serves the men well and better. If a woman receives a talaq-e-biddat from her husband, she can’t do anything else but pack from the man’s house. Why would a Muslim Man want to hang a noose around his head with a court or legal marriage? A time will come when men in Ghana will boycott court marriages for traditional ones.
