Why Ghana Water Limited has temporarily shut down Owabi Water treatment plant

Residents in parts of the Ashanti Region are facing water supply challenges after Ghana Water Limited (GWL) temporarily shut down the Owabi Water Treatment Plant due to a technical fault.

The disruption, which began around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026, was caused by a malfunction in the high-lift pump that draws treated water from the clear well.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, GWL said its engineers are working around the clock to fix the problem and restore operations.

“Management sincerely apologises for any inconvenience this situation may cause and assures customers that efforts are underway to restore water supply as quickly as possible,” the company said.

The shutdown has affected several communities, including Asuoyeboah, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Pokukrom, Bokankye, Nyankyereniase, Esaase, Akropong, Mfensi, Twedie, Abuakwa, Maakro, Mini, Nkwakom, Nkawie, Toase, Afari, Wioso, Mpasatia, Abrepo, Asuobonteng, Bronikrom, parts of Bohyen, the Military Barracks, and other surrounding areas.

GWL has urged residents in the affected areas to conserve water while repairs are ongoing.

It further assured the affected communities that water supply will be restored as soon as the fault is resolved.
