NPP Primary: The men who have more to lose than the contenders
Over 200,000 NPP delegates are participating in the election across the country to elect a flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Here are some of the things some prominent personalities have said about the primaries after observing the process so far:
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO)
The running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, stressed that the former vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would win the primaries to prepare for the 2028 general elections.
“I am really impressed by the turnout, their numbers, and the orderliness they are bringing. I am sure nothing untoward will happen. By 2PM, we will come back for the counting.
"I have said that the best person is my candidate. After this, there will be general peace in the party as it prepares for the next general elections and confronts government for the misgovernance of the country,” he said.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum
The NPP presidential aspirant expressed confidence in a positive outcome.
“I am appreciative of the work that has been done by the leaders of the constituency running the campaign for me to ensure I will thrive.
"I am happy to be here. I hope they appreciate me after the service,” he stated.
Justin Frimpong Kodua
The NPP General Secretary, in an interview, dismissed allegations of vote buying.
“So far, I have not seen anyone giving money to delegates, so such claims would only denigrate the party’s image. Money will not influence people, so it should be disregarded.
"If you give me money, I will take it for transport, but so far there is no such information,” he clarified.
Kennedy Agyapong
The NPP presidential aspirant emphasised the peaceful nature of the process.
“I don’t think there will be a repetition of what happened in 2023 — we hope it doesn’t. We have all done our job well to prevent rigging, so I expect a fair contest.
"Unpalatable things happened during the campaign, but that does not mean we should divide; we will come together after this,” he remarked.
Akosua Manu
The former NPP parliamentary candidate for the Adenta constituency commended the EC and security personnel for their efficiency.
“So far, the process has been peaceful and everything is going on very well. I am hopeful it will go in favor of Dr Bawumia.
"The EC and the police are doing a very good job because the queues don’t take long. There was propaganda yesterday but everything is fine today,” she noted.
Hawa Koomson
The former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament pledged to ensure peace at her polling station.
“By God’s grace, things are going on smoothly as the EC and polling station executives are here for the process. I will make sure there will be peace in this center.
"I will not tolerate any provocations; we will advise ourselves for a peaceful process,” she said.
