Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader
A member of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Anthony Karbo, has strongly rubbished reports circulating on social media suggesting that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer and his team are planning to oust Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV, with Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Karbo described the claims as baseless, unnecessary, and a distraction from the party’s larger mission of unity and electoral victory.
“Everybody has their preferences, but it’s not material. The party is looking at bigger things to do. These are issues we must ignore completely. We have one united NPP, and we must join hands to win power,” he stated.
He emphasised that the party has moved beyond personality-driven politics and should not be distracted by speculations that undermine unity.
“These are not the times to dwell on such matters. We have gone past those things in the politics of our party. It’s no longer about personalities; it’s about the New Patriotic Party,” he added.
Karbo also clarified that the NPP’s constitution does not grant the flagbearer the authority to make parliamentary leadership appointments, dismissing claims that Dr Bawumia has any hand in such decisions.
“Who told you that it is the flagbearer who makes those appointments? The constitution of our party is very clear. It has nothing to do with the flagbearer. The flagbearer has no role in that matter whatsoever,” he stated.
He further described the allegations as malicious, insisting that no such plans exist within the Bawumia camp.
“Nobody has any plans. Nobody is thinking in those directions. If such a thought even crosses your mind, then it can only come from an evil place. It’s completely hogwash,” he said.
Calling for calm within the party, he urged members and supporters to put the issue to rest and focus on consolidating the party ahead of the next general elections.
“Please, let’s bury these matters and move on. The candidate has won the election and is extending his hand and opening his heart to everybody. His focus is to put the party together and prepare for the big job ahead,” he urged.
Karbo concluded by appealing to party faithful to ignore the speculation and rally behind the party’s leadership to strengthen unity within the NPP.
