Lecturers drag Harry Sawyerr to Court

Thu, 25 May 1995 Source: --

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana have filed an ex parte motion seeking "to restrain the Minister of Education from ejecting lecturers from the University premises or from interfering with their quiet enjoyment of those premises". This law suit has been filed by UTAG members from all the Universities in the country.

It will be recalled that the Minister for Education, Mr Harry Sawyerr in a letter to Vice-Chancellors last month said that salaries of lecturers will not be paid if they failed to resume classes and set May 15 as a deadline for lecturers to resume classes or quit their bungalows.

Ghana Review stringers in Accra report that UTAG and government officials are still talking. And while there is talk, there seems to be hope. The thousands of students who have been sent home following the strike action certainly hope for a quick end to this dispute so that they can return to campus to complete their courses.
