Manager Walid Regragui has reportedly resigned from his role as head coach of the Moroccan national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to several media reports, the coach is unwilling to continue as the head coach of the Atlas Lions because of the events that unfolded under his leadership at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The exact reasons behind his decision to resign as head coach of the Atlas Lions have not yet been made public, as discussions are ongoing.

The decision rests with the Moroccan Football Federation, which will meet with Regragui to hear his concerns before deciding whether to approve or reject the request.

This development comes after the Atlas Lions lost the 2025 AFCON final, as Pape Gueye’s goal helped Senegal defeat the host nation 1-0, following Brahim Diaz’s missed penalty in the final minutes of the game.

The loss left some fans and journalists frustrated, with many questioning when the coach would step down, especially after the final match.

Prior to this, Regragui led the Atlas Lions to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, finishing in fourth place and becoming the first African nation to reach that stage.
