Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)
Paul Adom-Otchere, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), has weighed in on the outcome of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, suggesting that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory represents a strategic "geographic expansion" of his mandate.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the broadcaster and host of Good Evening Ghana, dissected the data behind Dr Bawumia's win, looking past the raw percentages to examine the shifting factional dynamics within the party.
Adom-Otchere admitted he had initially expected a more dominant numerical performance from the former Vice President, but found the actual data more revealing upon closer inspection.

“I was really hoping that Dr Bawumia would repeat the 60% he achieved previously, but when I looked at the results, I noticed that he had won places that he didn’t win before,” he noted.
“It is always important how the party sees him,” he stated.
A key part of his analysis focused on the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s traditional stronghold.

Adom-Otchere observed that while Dr Bawumia might not have seen a massive vertical spike in votes, his influence appeared to have moved horizontally across the region.
"In Ashanti... it looked like the spread was wider—the longitude didn’t go up, but it spread," he explained.
He cited specific improvements in the Labadi and Teshie areas, noting that Dr Bawumia managed to grow his share of support in these critical zones.
Adom-Otchere’s perspective suggests that Dr Bawumia’s ability to capture new territories within the party may be the key to neutralising tensions in the party and unifying the base ahead of the 2028 general election.
“When I saw [the gains in Teshie and Labadi], I thought, well, that’s not too bad,” he remarked, framing the result as a solid foundation for the campaign ahead.
