Renowned broadcaster at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Akushika Acquaye, has called for greater women’s participation in leadership and governance.

Speaking at the first annual national forum on women in government and media, she emphasised the importance of amplifying women’s voices, challenging stereotypes, and promoting inclusivity across media platforms.

“No amount of intimidation, restriction, or censorship will stop a woman whose time has come. And in Ghana, our time is now. Our women colleagues are not just participants; they are leaders shaping our narratives, driving accountability, and inspiring the next generation,” she said.

Acquaye also highlighted local success stories of female entrepreneurship and resilience.

“Think of Maa Regi Bakery, or the woman who started Trasaaco with nothing but determination and later became its owner. These stories show what women can achieve when given opportunities and platforms to shine,” she remarked.

Akushika Acquaye stressed that media plays a crucial role in promoting gender equality.

“As journalists and storytellers, we must counter stereotypes, amplify women-led initiatives, and give women the visibility they deserve. Our platforms should reflect the diverse society we serve,” she said.

While progress has been made, Acquaye acknowledged that disparities persist for women in leadership and senior media roles, and she urged collective action to address them.

“We must work together like a broom, moving forward together, stronger and united, to ensure women have a seat at every table. Keep pushing boundaries, challenge stereotypes, and inspire others. Women’s empowerment is not a zero-sum game; our success lifts the nation", she added.
