'We can't feed our families' - Konongo cocoa farmers lament price reduction

Cocoa farmers in Konongo and surrounding communities have expressed outrage over what they describe as government’s failure to pay them and the recent reduction in cocoa prices from GH¢3,625 to GH¢2,587.

The aggrieved farmers reportedly met with the Minority Caucus in Parliament on Wednesday February 25, 2026, in Konongo, seeking support to have their concerns raised on the floor of Parliament.

According to them, the price slash has significantly worsened their already difficult financial situation.

The farmers argue that the decision to reduce the cocoa price has come at a time when many of them are yet to receive payments for cocoa beans already supplied. They say the delay in payment, coupled with the price cut, is pushing many families into hardship.

Speaking to Metro TV's, Elizabeth Owusuaa Twum lamented that the situation has created severe financial strain for cocoa farmers in the area.

She said many are struggling to provide basic necessities for their families.

According to the farmers, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has failed to settle outstanding payments, leaving them unable to meet household expenses, pay school fees and reinvest in their farms.
