A brief moment of concern occurred outside Parliament of Ghana on Friday, February 27, 2026, as Speaker Alban Bagbin nearly fell while departing shortly after the delivery of the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The incident happened as President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, First Lady Lordina Mahama, and members of their security detail exited the premises following what had been a largely successful address.

Quick reactions from those around helped steady the Speaker as they proceeded.

Earlier, President Mahama delivered his 2026 State of the Nation Address, outlining his government’s priorities for the year ahead.

He acknowledged that his administration inherited a distressed economy but noted that progress has been made in stabilising the country and placing it on a path to recovery.

The president admitted that the journey has been difficult but stressed that policy interventions are beginning to yield results.

“I was clear from the outset that recovery would not come easily, but I was also clear that I would stop at nothing to turn this situation around and bring relief to Ghanaians,” he stated.

He noted that just as he had confronted crises in the past, his administration remains committed to resetting the economy and restoring growth and development.

"I told this August House when I appeared before you last year that we would have to take tough, prudent, and necessary decisions to restore stability and credibility. Today, I can say with confidence: Ghana is back. Ghana is working again and is open for business. The fundamentals are improving, and the path to sustained acceleration is clear.

"From the outset, we resolved to choose discipline over waste, reform over excuses, and stability over speculation. As a responsible government, our first order of business was to halt the economic haemorrhage and restore order to our public finances. We tightened expenditure and commitment controls, improved payables reporting, and conducted a comprehensive audit of 2024 commitments to restore credibility and discipline. he remarked.

President Mahama also outlined priority areas for the coming year, including the economy, energy, agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and job creation.

The address touched on several key national concerns, including the no-bed syndrome in hospitals, illegal mining (galamsey), education, and other critical sectors.
