The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has gifted seven outboard motors to artisanal canoe owners at Senya Breku whose equipment was stolen during a recent pirate attack.

The donation to the fishermen on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, aims to cushion affected victims and restore livelihoods disrupted by the incident.

The victims, who had set out in the early hours of February 26, 2026, to fish, were reportedly returning to shore when the pirates operating on the high waters allegedly attacked them and made away with outboard motors and generator sets.

A total of 71 fishermen who were affected were later rescued, after they were left stranded at sea for hours without engines to power their canoes back to safety.

The incident has sparked concern among coastal fishing communities, prompting calls for stronger security measures.

Arthur reaffirmed the government’s intention to protecting fisherfolk and enhancing security within Ghana’s territorial waters.
