Ayawaso East constituency in the Greater Accra Region, is one of the most politically consistent constituencies in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

Since the restoration of constitutional rule in 1992, the seat has remained firmly in the hands of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Over more than three decades, its Members of Parliament have represented densely populated communities such as Nima, Kanda, Maamobi, and surrounding areas, advocating on issues ranging from urban infrastructure and sanitation to national policy oversight.

Below is a detailed, chronological list of persons who represented Ayawaso East in Parliament from 1992 to 2026, including key factual highlights and significant events during their tenure.

1. Yahaya Seidu (1993–1997)

Yahaya Seidu became the first National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ayawaso East under Ghana’s Fourth Republic following the 1992 general elections. His tenure coincided with Ghana’s transition from military rule to constitutional democracy under President Jerry John Rawlings.

As part of the inaugural Parliament of the Fourth Republic, Seidu contributed to laying the legislative foundations of the new democratic era. During this period, Parliament worked on stabilising democratic institutions and strengthening governance structures.

This was also a time of addressing rapid urban growth and the demand for improved public services in inner-cities in Accra.

His dual role in Parliament and the executive strengthened Ayawaso East’s connection to national policy discussions on environmental regulation and urban development.

3. Dr Mustapha Ahmed (2001–2013)

Mustapha Ahmed aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) served three consecutive terms, making him one of the longest-serving MPs in the constituency’s history.

Significant national developments during his tenure includes the historic year 2000 democratic transfer of power from the NDC to the NPP.

Expansion of infrastructure and social services in Greater Accra.

Ahmed maintained active engagement with constituents and focused on urban infrastructure challenges such as drainage, roads, and market development within the constituency.

4. Naser Toure Mahama (2013–January 2026)

Naser Toure Mahama also of NDC represented Ayawaso East for four consecutive terms, making him one of its most prominent and enduring MPs.

During his time in Parliament, he served on key committees including the Energy Committee and the Roads and Transportation Committee, contributing to legislative oversight in critical national sectors.

Significant highlights of his tenure includes;

- Advocacy for improved drainage systems to combat flooding in Nima and surrounding areas.

- Community development initiatives such as sanitation projects and infrastructure upgrades.

He passed away on January 4, 2026, creating a vacancy that constitutionally required a by-election.

5. Baba Jamal March 2026

Before this, he had served as a Member of Parliament in Akwatia constituency and as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, bringing both legislative and diplomatic experience to the role.

His election followed the passing of Naser Toure Mahama and marked a continuation of the NDC’s uninterrupted control of the constituency since 1992.

Early priorities highlighted during the by-election period included strengthening grassroots engagement, community support programmes, and continuity of ongoing development initiatives.

From 1992 to 2026, Ayawaso East has remained a consistent parliamentary stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Across different political eras including peaceful transfers of power, economic reforms, and urban development challenges its MPs have played roles in both national policy-making and local constituency advocacy.

This continuity reflects both the political identity of the constituency and the sustained support for the NDC within Ayawaso East over three decades of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
