Two Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) with the National Ambulance Service narrowly escaped harm after unknown assailants opened fire on their ambulance in the early hours of Monday, March 2, 2026, near Yendi.

The crew, Senior Emergency Medical Technician (SEMT) Anthony Donkor and Emergency Medical Technician Alexander Adu Blowing, were returning to Kpassa after handing over a critical patient at the Tamale Teaching Hospital when the incident occurred.

The Ambulance Service, in a Facebook post on Thursday, March 5, 2026, explained that the ambulance, with registration number GV-657-20, was approaching the first security barrier at Yendi at about 3:12 a.m. when the gunmen suddenly opened fire on the vehicle.

The gunshots shattered the ambulance’s windscreen and damaged both front tyres, placing the crew in a dangerous situation.

“The windscreen shattered and both front tyres were blasted out by gunfire. In a split-second display of professional skill and raw courage, SEMT Anthony Donkor didn’t panic. Under direct fire, he engaged the reverse gear and executed a high-speed tactical retreat, manoeuvring the crippled vehicle 0.5 km to the safety of the Yendi Police Checkpoint,” the National Ambulance Service recounted.

Despite the attack, Donkor managed to maintain control of the vehicle. In what officials described as a swift and courageous response, he quickly engaged reverse gear and manoeuvred the damaged ambulance about half a kilometre to the nearby police checkpoint in Yendi for safety.

Both EMTs escaped the incident without sustaining any injuries.

The ambulance, however, suffered significant damage, including a collapsed windscreen and two deflated front tyres. Authorities say a full inspection will be carried out to determine whether the vehicle sustained any additional ballistic damage.

“Both SEMT Donkor and EMT Blowing are physically safe and uninjured, with the vehicle at the police checkpoint. Vehicle GV-657-20 sustained significant damage, including a collapsed windscreen and two deflated/blasted front tyres. A full inspection for further ballistic damage is pending,” the post added.

The matter has since been reported to the police, who are expected to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, the Ambulance Service commended the crew for their bravery and composure under pressure.

“Our EMTs face more than just medical emergencies; they face the dangers of the road to ensure we stay safe. We salute the bravery of the Kpassa Crew for their quick thinking and resilience,” the Service stated.
