The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says the adjustment will take effect April 1
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a downward adjustment in electricity and water tariffs, effective April 1, 2026, as part of its second quarter tariff review.
In the statement detailing the tariff reduction, the Commission also announced the introduction of Ghana’s first commercial Electric Vehicle (EV) charging tariff, signalling a step toward the country’s green energy transition.
Electricity tariffs will be reduced by an average of 4.81%, while water tariffs will see a 3.06% decrease.
These changes are based on PURC’s quarterly review mechanism, which tracks fluctuations in key economic indicators that affect utility service providers.
In its statement published on Friday, March 13, 2026, PURC explained: “Having carefully analysed the aforementioned existing parameters, the Commission wishes to announce a downward adjustment in electricity tariffs of an average reduction of 4.81% and a 3.06% reduction in water tariffs. To promote green energy transition, the Commission, for the first time, has introduced a commercial Electric Vehicle (EV) charging tariff.”
The review, according to the statement, considered several factors, including a 6.78% drop in the Ghana Cedi–US Dollar exchange rate, a 47.87% decline in the average inflation rate, and a 2.84% increase in the weighted average cost of natural gas. The electricity generation mix remains unchanged, with 20.90% from hydro sources and 79.10% from thermal generation, consistent with the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) of 2025.
PURC also emphasised that the tariff adjustments are designed to maintain the real value of utility pricing, ensuring financial viability for service providers while minimising the burden on consumers.
The introduction of the EV charging tariff also reflects the Commission’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s energy transition and promoting sustainable transport solutions.
