A Ghanaian soldier, Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia, of the Ghana Armed Forces, who was injured in a missile attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon earlier in March 2026, is recovering after surgery, according to the United Nations.

The attack, which occurred in early March, affected Ghanaian troops serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Officials who visited the injured soldier, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, described his recovery as encouraging.

“Great to learn that Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia of Ghana, one of the peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon who was recently injured during a missile attack, is recovering,” the UN said in a statement.

They reiterated calls for protecting peacekeeping personnel in conflict zones.

The UN shared a photo of the injured soldier with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, by his side.

Three personnel sustained minor injuries during the incident.

At the same time, Lance Corporal Busia, who was critically injured, has “successfully undergone surgery and [is] responding to treatment,” a corroborative statement by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said.

The UN emphasised that peacekeepers should not be targeted in conflict zones.

“Indeed peacekeepers are not a target,” the UN said, using the campaign message #NotATarget.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has petitioned the UN Secretary-General to investigate the attack and ensure sanctions against those responsible.

Ghana is a major troop-contributing country to UN peacekeeping missions.
