The annual quiz forms part of activities marking Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations
Traditional authorities in the Western Region have called on students to remain focused on their education and avoid behaviours that could undermine their future ambitions.
The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Kobina Nketia V, advised students to shun negative activities and instead dedicate their time to academic pursuits in order to become responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to national development.
Nana Kobina Nketia V, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, made the remarks while chairing the 11th Western Regional Inter-District Basic Schools Independence Day Quiz Competition held at Agona Nkwanta in the Ahanta West Municipality on Friday, March 13, 2026.
At the end of the keenly contested competition, Peace International School from Half Assini in the Jomoro Municipality emerged winners with 65 points. They defeated Tarkwa Goldfields School Complex, which placed second with 43 points, while Wood Bridge Academy from the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) secured third place with 32 points.
The annual quiz forms part of activities marking Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations in the Western Region and is an initiative championed by the region’s traditional leadership. Fourteen schools from various districts and municipalities participated in this year’s edition.
The competition covered a broad range of subjects including Ghana’s pre-colonial and post-colonial history, the pre- and post-independence era, environment, chieftaincy and tradition, mathematics, science and current affairs.
Nana Kobina Nketia V also encouraged parents to invest time and resources in their children’s education, emphasising that traditional leaders in the region remain committed to implementing initiatives that will support the development of young people.
The Vice President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Lower Dixcove Traditional Area, Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, who attended the event as Special Guest of Honour, praised the confidence demonstrated by the participating students. He also commended teachers for their dedication in preparing the contestants.
He further appealed to corporate organisations within and outside the region to continue supporting programmes that nurture and showcase the talents of students.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of the Organising Committee and Paramount Chief of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Area, Obrempong Hima Dekyi XIV, expressed gratitude to the numerous sponsors whose support ensured the success of the event.
Some of the sponsors included JAS Mining Ltd, Ghana National Gas Company, Enclave Gold Ltd, Freight Consult, Global Ore Industries Ltd, Amor Sibling, Smartmine, Chiefeng Gold–Golden Star, Betterland Ghana Ltd, Energy Resources Company Ltd, Clean-Jobs Resources Ltd, Ale 1 Gold Mining Ltd, Mantra Ghana, Adamus Resources Ltd, Makam Plant Hire (MPH), Engineers and Planners, Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Ltd, Mahasco Mining Ventures, Mintech and Quantum Terminals PLC, among others. Support was also received from the offices of the Members of Parliament for Ellembelle and Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, as well as the Municipal Chief Executive for Nzema East.
Obrempong Hima Dekyi XIV noted that the competition aims to broaden students’ knowledge across multiple disciplines while promoting awareness of Ghana’s history and cultural heritage. He also expressed concern about declining levels of integrity in society and urged stakeholders to work together to instil discipline among the youth.
In the final standings, Socinaf School from Wassa East, the defending champions from the 2025 edition, finished fourth with 31.5 points, while Ghana-China Basic School placed fifth with 31 points. The Services School Complex in Sekondi-Takoradi and St. Augustinus School from the Nzema East Municipality followed in subsequent positions.
As part of their prize package, the champions received two laptops, two trophies to be shared between the school and the district Ghana Education Service (GES) directorate, gold medals, tablets for the three contestants, dictionaries, textbooks, exercise books, student companions, plaques and certificates.
The second-placed Tarkwa Goldfields School Complex was awarded two laptops, tablets for the contestants, dictionaries, textbooks and exercise books, silver medals, plaques and certificates. Wood Bridge Academy, which placed third, received a laptop, bronze medals, tablets for the contestants, textbooks, dictionaries, plaques and other learning materials.
Schools that placed from fourth to fourteenth were also presented with assorted prizes including textbooks, exercise books, mathematical sets, dictionaries, plaques and certificates.
