Swarm Terror: 5 times bee attacks caused panic and casualties

A growing pattern of bee attacks is sweeping across Ghana, leaving a trail of hospitalisations and deaths that has prompted urgent calls for improved community safety and pest management.

From schools to public spaces, these encounters are becoming increasingly alarming as nature’s gift to man, appears to have turned hazardous to the very people it is expected to serve.

Below are some of the cases reported in recent years:

Kpandai: Man killed in bee attack (Dec 2025)

A man believed to be in his mid-60s has died after he was attacked by a swarm of bees in Kpandai in the Northern Region on Sunday afternoon, December 14, 2025.

The tragic incident occurred at the Bowmarie Resort shortly after the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) held a town hall meeting with branch executives ahead of the December 30, 2025 Kpandai parliamentary rerun.

Akatsi North bee attack(Dec 2025)

Akuvi Egbor, a farmer from Avega, a farming community within Akatsi North in the Volta Region lost her life when she was attacked by a swarm of bees on her farm at Kunyorwu, near Avega.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, left another 82-year-old woman, named Eya Xenyo in critical condition at St Anthony's Hospital in Dzodze.

Anloga bee attack (2025)

This incident which happened at the EP Basic school in Anloga on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, claimed the lives of two pupils.

Both victims; Theodora Amewovi, 9, and Michael Kumeko, 4, died after a swam of bees attacked them while in school.

According to the Assemblyman for the area, Johnson Bokovi, at about 10:30 am that morning, the pupils who were on break were playing football when the bees, nesting in a nearby tree were disturbed leading to the fatal attack.

Winneba A.M.E. Zion Girls SHS bees attack (2026)

A final-year student of Effutu AME Zion Girls Senior High School, Emmanuella Quainoo, died after a swarm of bees attacked her on campus in the Effutu Municipality.

The incident reportedly occurred around 5:00 pm on the school premises, where the student was stung by the bees.

She was rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital but was pronounced dead in the early hours of the following morning on March 19, 2026 while receiving treatment.

Gomoa East bees attack (Feb 2026)

One person was left in a in critical condition, while 40 others, including four police officers, sustained injuries after a swarm of bees attacked Daavi Blessed Police Station at Gomoa Amoada Junction in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

Reports indicated that the bees attacked when the bonnet a faulty tipper truck parked beside the police station was opened, releasing the swarm who were inhabiting the abandoned vehicle.

The increasing frequency of these attacks underscores the need for public awareness and proactive measures to prevent further tragedies.
