A disturbing viral video has exposed the extent of lack of beds at wards at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) as patients are seen lying on the bare floors of the biggest hospital in the country.
The amateur video shared by The1957News on X, on March 20, 2026, emphasised the deepening crisis in Ghana's healthcare system.
Despite a strict government mandate intended to end the no-bed syndrome, the reality on the ground appears to be a trade-off between admission and basic dignity.

The footage shows several patients, some visibly frail and in need of urgent care, sleeping on the hard hospital floors.
“An amateur video obtained by The1957News has revealed a troubling development at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital following the government’s directive to health facilities not to turn away patients on the basis of unavailable beds.
“The footage shows several patients sleeping on the floor in the emergency ward due to the persistent ‘no bed syndrome’ crisis,” the post stated.

It stated further that; “Further inquiries confirm that, in line with the government’s instructions, nurses are admitting patients despite the acute shortage of beds. As a result, with insufficient beds available in the emergency ward, many patients have no choice but to lie or sit on the floor while awaiting treatment.”
The development comes within a period when there was an unfortunate death of Charles Amissah, a victim of a hit-and-run incident at the Nkrumah Circle Overpass in Accra, on February 6, 2026.
He was reportedly refused emergency care by three major hospitals in Accra, with the explanation there were no available beds.
President John Dramani Mahama, during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2026, directed medical practitioners to attend to emergency cases even if it meant improvising a makeshift bed at their facilities.
