Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has defended her role in Ghana’s SIM card registration exercise, pushing back against what she calls “false narratives” aimed at discrediting her work, according to citinewsroom.com report.

According to the report, in a statement issued on March 20, 2026, Owusu-Ekuful emphasised that the 2022–2023 registration drive, though not flawless, successfully linked nearly 30 million SIM cards to Ghana Cards.

She argued that the initiative strengthened the country’s national identification system and laid a solid foundation for future digital governance.

Owusu-Ekuful criticised the current administration for failing to acknowledge the progress made under her leadership. She accused government officials of dismissing the previous process publicly while quietly adopting the same methodology.

“This government should stop pretending that it is starting afresh or doing anything new…governance is a continuum. If something has been started and useful progress has been made, the duty of the next government is to build on it, improve it, and be honest about it.”

She further questioned why the same registration structure was being repeated if it had been deemed ineffective, warning against political spin that undermines continuity in governance.

Concluding her remarks, Owusu-Ekuful switched to Twi, declaring: “Wo nyi m’ayɛ a, mɛnsɛi me din!!”, meaning, “If you cannot praise me, do not tarnish my reputation.”
