Obrepong Kwadwo, the father of Philip Quarcoe, and chief of Cape Coast was a prominent slave raider and trader. He was paid 17 pounds every two weeks in the 1700s.
Osei Tutu and other Asante Chiefs sold slaves to the Dutch massively in return for arms to capture more slaves. A historical fact we'll documented by the European slave traders who were in the Gold Coast. Do not expect Kwaku Dua to tell you these horrible facts about his ancestors.. They were also benefactors of the vile and despicable slave trade. Akufo Addo ancestors were slave traders too!

Nevertheless we have to look at who was more culpable for Slavery and who did the most inhumane things which ultimately constituted to Slavery being regarded as a crime against humanity and it wasn't the ignorant black Africans brother. Most black Africans without Western demands for cheap labour after the discovery of the new World, would not have tempted to sell other blacks. Probably they would have killed them because most slaves sold to the West was for monies and to weaken the enemy against getting stronger one day as all the slaves sold to Westerners by blacks were mostly prisoners of wars and tribal conflicts. Now please agree with me that when the blacks were selling their colleagues as Slaves, they weren't aware or knowledgeable about where they would be sent. They didn't know they would be sent into slavery to work on Plantations and pick cotton with cruelty. No never. If they knew their fellow blacks were going into cruelty regimes, they won't have sold them. They sold them to discard them believing they were going abroad just to work for other people. But the Westerners who were more enlightened, advanced etc knew why they were buying them,. And the deplorable conditions on the ships , and the inhumane treatments blacks in the Diaspora undergone, during Slavery, but particularly even at the end of Slavery through different racist events etc, means Slavery became a name and a heartless even which will forever live in Infamy. Now, when the British abolished the slave trade and human sacrifices in the 1830s in the Gold Coast, our own greedy and rapacious Asante Kings will have none of it why? because it was a good source of income for them.And, they continued right up until Prempeh 1 got his comeuppance in 1896.
We cannot whitewash this. What about human sacrifice?. Prempeh 1 was slaughtering over 3000 people annually just for his river gods Antoa, Tano, Asuoyebo etc. What was the purpose of it,? Those who were in Kumasi such as TE Bowdich in 1817 right up to Baden Powell in 1896 , documented the inhumane treatment and the numerous killings that used to go on.
In Batama, for example, Osei Tutu and Okomfo Anokye, having seized a huge brass pan from the King of Sefwi called "Ayawa Kese" used it to cut off human heads into it, drain their bloods mix it with herbs and actually drink it. They have a complete graphics of how it was done before the blew the whole place up. Kumasi alone had about six execution centres. Please, I have read enough factual historical books about the horrible attitude of our past Kings ,and I do not accept your eloquent written English and explanation.
Their descendants are doing the same as chiefs with their active participation wholesale destruction of our once pristine forest and clean rivers. They were and are as guilty as sin. Cheers!

President Mahama is absolutely right about the Transatlantic Slave Trade being recognised as a henious crime against humanity. But the big question is, who were the perpetrators to that crime. Was it just the Western European Governments and their people who immorally benefited from it, or does it also include some of our forefathers, i.e. the traditional authorities and/or influencial/powerful people who were participants in, and profiteers from that evil trade?

All participants in that monstrous trade should be held accountabe, and not just one 'group'.
