A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has alleged that former President Nana Akufo-Addo failed to honour a promise made to former Minister of Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen.
Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb’s Etsey Atisu on The Lowdown, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe recounted the events of the party’s 2008 presidential primaries.
“The congress started at Legon on a Friday, and they couldn’t get a leader. It had to run into Sunday, and a leader was not picked because Akufo-Addo couldn’t get 50 plus one, even though he had the highest figures among all of them,” he said.
He said that Kyerematen, who was also contesting, agreed to step aside after being persuaded, clearing the way for Akufo-Addo to become the party’s flagbearer.
“Alan was spoken to, and he stepped aside. That gave Akufo-Addo the opportunity to lead the party,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said.
Alan Kyerematen resigned at the wrong time - Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe
Nyaho-Tamakloe alleged that Akufo-Addo promised to support Kyerematen’s future presidential ambitions, but the pledge was not fulfilled.
“That promise, to me, was not fulfilled when he finished his time and was about to leave. In my mind, he should have done that at that point,” he stated.
He added that Kyerematen remained calm despite the situation.
“Alan himself should have thought twice about his political future. Surprisingly, he was calm about it,” he noted.
He also highlighted internal party manoeuvring in later elections, referencing the emergence of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“When they had elections to select the flagbearer, there was a lot of manoeuvring. We saw it, and Alan couldn’t make it. Yet, when the government was formed, he was among the early members of the cabinet,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said.
