Private legal practitioner, Oliver Baker-Vormawor, has criticised government’s plan to fund supporters to 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament slated for June 11 to July 19, 2026, describing the move as ‘unconscionable’ and ‘insensitive’ given Ghana’s pressing healthcare needs.

In a Facebook post on April 1, 2026, he said he watched ‘with dismay’ comments by the Sports Minister indicating that government intends to sponsor not more than 800 supporters at a cost of $9,250 per person to travel to the United States to support the Ghana national football team during the group stage.

“To learn that Government plans to spend $7.4 million for people to go and ‘shee jama’ at the World Cup is so unconscionable and incredibly insensitive that I cannot mince words about it,” he stated.

He cautioned that if the decision is allowed to go through, it would erode confidence in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its commitment to national development.

Baker-Vormawor contrasted the proposed expenditure with the recently launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund by President John Dramani Mahama, which is aimed at supporting Ghanaians with critical health conditions.

He urged authorities to redirect the funds to the MahamaCare initiative instead, insisting that such spending priorities do not reflect the country’s current needs.

“This must be stopped. They must donate that money to MahamaCare. Please, for the love of God, make this make sense. Have we learnt nothing since Brazil?” he stated.

Baker-Vormawor stated that he would withhold any donation to the fund until the proposal is scrapped, expressing frustration over what he described as misplaced national priorities.
