Rank distinctions are marked by specific star patterns of two-star or single star symbols.

According to the Service, the move is aimed at aligning its structure with international standards, as well as harmonising its ranks with those of other sister security agencies.

In a statement released on its Facebook page on March 28, 2026, the Ghana Prisons Service described the development as one that “signals a total transformation of its institutional identity.”

“In a landmark event that signals a total transformation of its institutional identity, a move designed to correct historical complexities and streamline the organizational organogram,” it stated.
