L-R: Kwasi Appiah, Herve Renard and Walid Regragui are football coaches
Top coaches from around the world have been linked to the Ghana Football Association's search for a new Black Stars coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
The GFA released an official statement on March 31, 2026, announcing that they had parted ways with Addo and expressing appreciation for his efforts with the team.
This has prompted the association to begin the hunt for a replacement, considering the limited time before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

James Kwasi Appiah
Former Black Stars coach James Kwasi Appiah’s name has emerged among those reportedly contacted. However, the current Sudan head coach has denied being approached by the GFA, though he declined to comment further on the speculation.
Appiah led war-torn Sudan to the 2025 AFCON and made it to the round of 16 but was eliminated by Senegal. His willingness to leave the project to take over the Black Stars remains to be seen.
Hervé Renard
Two-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning coach Hervé Renard has also been linked to the job after his dismissal as manager of the Saudi Arabia national team.
Renard is remembered by Ghanaians for leading Côte d’Ivoire to defeat the Black Stars on penalties in the 2015 AFCON final, a heartbreaking moment for the nation.
The major concern with him is his high salary demands, and whether the GFA can afford them remains uncertain.
Walid Regragui
The most talked about names among the potential candidates are former Morocco coach Walid Regragui, who stepped down after the 2025 AFCON despite reaching the final, where Morocco lost to Senegal.
Media reports suggest the GFA has contacted him, though details of the discussions have not yet been made public.
Regragui made history by guiding Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to achieve that feat. Securing him would be a huge boost for Ghana.
Other Candidates
Other names that have surfaced include Charles Akonnor, Laryea Kingston, Desmond Offei, Winfried Schäfer, Kim Björkegren, and Tom Saintfiet.
The GFA has assured the public that updates on the hiring process will be provided as the nation awaits the final decision.
