Former coach Christopher Nimley has alleged that President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, repeatedly interfered in the work of Black Stars managers, even threatening their jobs and influencing squad selections.

Speaking on Citi Sports, Nimley claimed that such actions created tensions between the Ghana Football Association leadership and coaches of the Ghana national football team.

His comments come amid renewed debates over the national team's management, following the dismissal of Otto Addo.

According to Nimley, the pattern of interference dates back to when Kwasi Appiah was still in charge of the Black Stars, when Okraku became GFA president back in 2019.

He recounted a specific moment in Cape Coast when Appiah decided to hand a first call-up to rising star Mohammed Kudus. But according to him, the decision was initially questioned by the GFA president.

“I was there when Kwasi Appiah, in Cape Coast, invited Kudus to play for the Black Stars for the first time. Kurt Okraku doubted Kwasi’s technical ability to invite Kudus and he told him, If it doesn’t go well, it will cost you your job,” he revealed.

Despite the warning, Nimley said Kudus went on to deliver an outstanding performance in the match.

However, Nimley claimed that Appiah was dismissed not long after.

Following Appiah’s departure, C K Akonnor was appointed as Black Stars head coach, a move many believed would align the team’s leadership more closely with the GFA hierarchy.

But Nimley suggested the relationship quickly deteriorated.

“He brought in CK Akonnor, who was supposed to be his own man. But they never saw eye to eye. He and CK started the confusion. When CK submitted his team list, he would take a pen and cancel names from the manager’s list,” Nimley alleged.

The former coach also criticised public remarks made by Okraku regarding the role of the GFA in team selection.

“He went on public radio and TV and said no coach will be allowed to select his own players in the end. He even said that even when he is incapacitated, I’m quoting him, he will have to be consulted. He will appoint someone who believes in his thinking to ensure that the coach alone will never have that authority,” he added.
