In a raw and impassioned interview with DAZN Boxing, former world champion Deontay Wilder laid bare the historical pain and enduring struggle of Black people, drawing from both history and personal conviction.

Wilder reflected on the centuries of oppression, from slavery to systemic discrimination, and how those legacies still shape Black lives today.

He spoke of being misunderstood when he channels anger or passion, explaining it as a response to history that cannot be erased.

“How many people wish they were Black or want to go through what Black people have gone through? See, when I talk about it, they say you can't think about old situations because it brings old feelings back up. But nobody wants to get in our shoes and feel what we felt,” he said.

He highlighted the historical injustices inflicted on Black people: being taken from their land, stripped of names, and denied agency.

“We did nothing to anyone but show how powerful we were as human beings, and we are still powerful,” he added.

Wilder also emphasised love, unity, and community as central to his philosophy, challenging prejudice based on skin color, calling on people to “get real, get serious.”

“I don’t hate; I love all people, but I love my people. To love someone that’s free, that’s simple to do,” he said.

Wilder is set to face Derek Chisora in a 12-round heavyweight bout on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at London’s O2 Arena.

The fight marks a pivotal comeback for Wilder after his recent losses.
