On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, Hon. Seidu Issifu, took a significant step toward advancing Ghana’s climate agenda through a high-level engagement with the Ghana National Gas Company led by its CEO, Judith Adjobah Blay.

The meeting focused on building a strong institutional relationship and identifying strategic areas of collaboration, particularly in climate finance, advancing decarbonisation efforts, and sustainable energy development.

Ghana Gas, the country’s state-owned midstream gas company, plays a critical role in processing and transporting natural gas for power generation and industrial use. As Ghana pursues a low-carbon development pathway, the company’s operations are central to balancing energy security with climate commitments.

Discussions underscored the urgency of climate change and the need for coordinated national action. Both parties acknowledged that climate finance presents a vital opportunity for mobilising resources to support sustainable projects. The Minister highlighted his readiness to support Ghana Gas in accessing funding for green initiatives.

A key area of focus was the decarbonisation of Ghana Gas’ operations and value chain. The discussions explored practical pathways to reduce emissions, including improving energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy solutions, and transitioning towards cleaner fuels.

The Chief Executive of Ghana Gas, Judith Adjobah Blay, emphasised the strategic opportunity to embed climate safeguards and align infrastructure development with both national and international environmental standards.

Seidu also highlighted the importance of moving from high-level discussions to technical collaboration. To this end, both institutions agreed to establish a Joint Working Group to drive continuous engagement, develop actionable plans and ensure effective implementation of agreed initiatives.

He noted that strengthening institutional capacity is critical to improving access to green financing. In furtherance of that, Ghana Gas’s newly established Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Department will play a central role in advancing sustainability efforts. Collaboration between the ESG team and the Office of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability’s technical team is expected to enhance project design, environmental management and reporting frameworks.

Several concrete areas of collaboration were identified. These include co-developing bankable projects for green finance, particularly in energy efficiency, methane emission reduction and renewable energy integration. Both parties also discussed advancing carbon management readiness, including exploring carbon capture technologies and assessing opportunities for low-carbon hydrogen production.

In addition, the partnership will seek to support broader environmental and social objectives, such as strengthening environmental management systems and promoting climate-smart practices. Ghana Gas’s ongoing tree-planting initiatives and its efforts to adopt more scientific approaches to sustainability were recognised as important steps in this direction.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both institutions expressing strong commitment to leveraging their respective strengths to drive climate action. By aligning Ghana Gas’ operational priorities with national climate objectives, the partnership is poised to unlock new opportunities for sustainable growth, climate finance mobilisation and emissions reduction.

As Ghana continues to navigate the path towards a resilient and low-carbon future, collaborations such as this demonstrate the critical role of strategic partnerships in delivering impactful and lasting change.
