A fire fighter in a viral social media post has explained how to safely douse fire when a vehicle burst into flames.

In many cases, people rush to help, trying different methods to put out the flames, including pouring water on the fire.

However, in most instances, the damage becomes extensive, with the vehicle often burning completely to ashes because these methods, though they may seem practical, are not effective in addressing the situation.

On the back of that, the firefighter has shared practical steps drivers can take to safely extinguish a vehicle fire, cautioning against common mistakes that could worsen the situation.

In a video sighted on X, on April 6, 20216, she warned that widely opening the bonnet during a fire can increase the intensity of the flames.

“Mostly when your car is on fire, people suggest that you open the bonnet widely and remove the battery terminal. No! That is not how to effectively extinguish fire [in your vehicle]. When you sense fire, quickly open your bonnet a little to create a small space,” she said.

She outlined the proper use of a fire extinguisher in such situations.

“Apply pass and remove the pin from your fire extinguisher and insert the nozzle of the extinguisher in the small space you created in your bonnet and spray it extensively,” she narrated.

The firefighter stressed that opening the bonnet fully can make the fire worse due to increased airflow.

“This is how to effectively extinguish vehicular fire. You don’t have to open the bonnet widely to expose its contents. When you do that, you are rather increasing the fire intensity,” she explained.

The firefighter further advised motorists to ensure the extinguishing agent is properly applied before taking any further steps.

“When you create the small space by opening the bonnet, ensure that the contents of the extinguisher has covered the surface of the engine and every component in the car before you open it,” she stated.
