The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Member of Parliament for Assin South and a sponsor of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, accused the president of backtracking on his promise to pass the bill while in opposition.

According to him, the bill remains a key concern for many Ghanaians, citing findings by CDD-Ghana which suggests that a majority of citizens support legislation on the matter.

He, therefore, urged President Mahama to take immediate steps to ensure the passage of the bill and assent to it when approved by Parliament.

“The real shift we are witnessing is beyond ideology. It is purely deception. They exploited the genuine moral concerns of Ghanaians as a stepping stone to power. They weaponised it to deceive the public only to turn around in power to abandon the pursuit and now deprioritise these concerns at the altar of political convenience and international appeasement.

“Now, therefore, the NPP together with the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians demands the immediate re-alignment of President Mahama’s priorities. President John Mahama must realign his priorities in line with the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians,” he remarked.

Speaking on Monday, March 30,2036, during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at the Jubilee House in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama said the matter, while important, is not the most pressing challenge facing the nation at the moment.

“I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that it is not the most important issue we face as a nation. We are still grappling with the provisions of basic needs of education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter.

“While there are strong and differing views within our society, we believe that issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” he said.

The bill significantly expands criminal sanctions related to same-sex conduct and imposes up to three years in prison for anyone who even identifies as LGBT+.

It also subjects individuals and organizations who advocate for the rights of LGBT people to prosecution.
