President John Dramani Mahama held an emergency meeting with his Cabinet on Friday, April 9, 2026, over the increase in crude oil prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.

The purpose of the meeting was to find ways to ensure that Ghanaians are not directly affected by the increases in global crude oil prices due to the war between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Israel and its ally, the United States (US).

The Minister of State in charge of Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a post shared on social media on Friday, gave details of some of the major decisions taken by Cabinet at the emergency meeting.

According to him, one of the decisions made by the Cabinet was the suspension of some taxes on fuel.

“Ministers of Finance and Energy, directed by Cabinet, to ensure a reduction in fuel prices in the next pricing window through the SUSPENSION of some taxes and margins (said taxes and margins to be announced at the next pricing window).

This is to last for four weeks and is subject to review based on the evolving situation in the Middle East conflict and movements in crude oil prices,” he added.

The minister, who doubles as the spokesperson to the President, also said that the Minister of Transport has been directed to work with drivers to ensure that transport fares are not increased.

He also said that government appointees have been directed to comply with the President’s decision to cancel fuel coupons and allowances.
