Vendors found operating without valid medical certificates risk facing arrest
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to roll out a special night-time enforcement operation targeting food vendors operating without mandatory medical screening across the metropolis.
In a statement dated April 10, 2026, the Assembly said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen food safety compliance, improve sanitation, and protect residents from food borne diseases.
Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, explained that while many daytime vendors have complied due to routine checks by Environmental Health Officers, a number of night operators have deliberately evaded the process by exploiting reduced enforcement after dark.
“While many daytime food vendors have complied with the medical screening requirements due to regular monitoring by Environmental Health Officers, a significant number of night operators have deliberately avoided the process by taking advantage of limited enforcement after dark,” he said.

He directed all night food vendors to undergo medical screening by the end of the week, warning that strict sanctions will be enforced when the operation begins on Monday, April 13, 2026.
According to him, vendors found operating without valid medical certificates risk having their food confiscated, facing arrest, or being barred from selling.
“Vendors found operating without valid medical certificates would have their food confiscated, face arrest, or be prevented from selling altogether,” he indicated.
He urged affected vendors to visit designated centres, including the Okaikoi South, Ablekuma South, and Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metropolitan offices, as well as, the AMA Metropolitan Health Directorate at the head office, to complete the screening process.
Ankrah stressed that the Assembly remains committed to safeguarding public health and will strictly enforce compliance, regardless of the time vendors operate.
