Former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta
Private legal practitioner and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has disclosed that former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been placed under strict court-imposed bail conditions in the United States, including the use of an electronic ankle monitor that restricts his movement.
He said the monitoring device confines the former minister to a defined perimeter set by the court as part of immigration-related bail terms.

“My understanding is the $65,000 bond and the electronic ankle monitor, which confines him to a perimeter within the jurisdiction of the court,” he stated on Newsfile on Joy News on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
According to him, the conditions also include the seizure of Ofori-Atta’s passport, mandatory reporting to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and strict notification requirements for any change of address.
"His passport has been obtained from him, he has to regularly check in with ICE, he has to notify ICE of any changes in address, those are the conditions," he remarked.
Barker-Vormawor further noted that the case relates to immigration proceedings rather than extradition, describing the bail arrangement as part of a US court decision.
He also questioned the handling and timing of communications between agencies involved in the case, suggesting delays in extradition-related processes between Ghana and the United States.
Ofori-Atta has been released from the custody of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a judicial order, his legal team has announced.
In a statement issued on April 8, 2026, his lawyers said the former minister was released on April 7, 2026, and has since returned home to his family.
Ofori-Atta's detention in the United States stems from ongoing investigations by Ghana's Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The OSP has been probing allegations of corruption and abuse of office involving the former minister, particularly relating to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme and other financial decisions during his tenure as finance minister.
