John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana
President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s commitment to reforming the Ghana Prisons Service, with the focus on improving conditions for both inmates and prison officers.
The President made the remarks when he received the Prisons Service Council, led by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, at a meeting to discuss challenges confronting the country’s prison system.
According to a report by adomonline.com on April 15, 2026, Mahama stressed the need for more humane conditions and a system that prioritises rehabilitation over punishment.
“Prison is not a place to wish your enemy,” he said, stressing the importance of humane treatment and reforms focused on rehabilitation.

The Council briefed the President on pressing issues within the Service and called for a comprehensive reform agenda to address infrastructure deficits and welfare concerns.
In response, President Mahama assured the delegation of government’s readiness to tackle these challenges and improve both facilities and staff conditions nationwide.
He also endorsed the ‘Think Prison, Think 360 Agenda,’ a policy initiative aimed at promoting a holistic approach to prison management, with emphasis on rehabilitation, reintegration, and the overall well-being of inmates and officers.
The meeting was attended by Council Chairman Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi and Director-General of Prisons Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, along with other officials.
