A man identified as Anane has allegedly set his mother on fire at Banda Sabiye following a long-standing family dispute linked to his relationship with his girlfriend.
The incident is said to have happened after the mother opposed his decision to continue the relationship, which had been marked by tension and accusations within the family.

A relative, who narrated the incident on Angel FM on April 14, 2026, said the conflict began about two years ago after a misunderstanding between Anane and his partner led to claims that curses had been invoked.
“Two years ago, my brother Anane and his girlfriend had an argument, which led to curses being invoked on her [girlfriend]. So our mother heard of the incident and the curses that had been invoked, so she called him to ask about the issue,” the relative said.
The relative explained that although Anane denied invoking any curses, their mother remained concerned and pursued the matter further.
“He denied the curses, but my mother pleaded with him to reverse the curse if he had done it. My mother, together with a family friend, travelled to Kumasi to meet my brother over the same issue, but my brother vehemently denied,” the relative added.
According to the relative, tensions escalated after the girlfriend allegedly insulted their mother, leading to further disagreement.
“My brother’s girlfriend later came to insult and disrespect my mother, using disparaging words on her. My mother then told the lady that she was disrespectful and that she would make sure my brother would no longer marry her,” the relative said.
The situation strained relations within the family, with Anane reportedly cutting ties and leaving the country.
He, however, returned to Ghana recently for a family funeral.
“Any family member who calls to speak with my brother, he insults them, so it affected our family’s relationship with him, and it’s been about two years. He travelled to Libya after the issue and had been there for two years, so he returned to Ghana recently because of a funeral,” the relative stated.
The relative said family elders were working to resolve the dispute when Anane allegedly made untrue claims against his mother.
He added that Anane had lied that his room had been rented out by his mother, prompting her to confront him.
“Family elders wanted to resolve the feud amongst us with our estranged brother. Anane said he had no issues with our mother, but he was lying against our mother that she had rented out his room,” he recalled.
He further explained that, unknown to them, Anane had gone to buy petrol and, in a fit of rage, first attempted to set him on fire but failed before proceeding to burn their mother.

“Not knowing, Anane has gone to buy petrol. In a fit of anger, he barged into the house to pick up the petrol and first poured it on me and attempted to light a fire. I hit his hand, and the lighter fell,” the relative recounted.
“Our mother, who was also seated and witnessing the incident, told him to kill us since he was determined to do so. He quickly poured the petrol on her and lit a lighter and threw it on her,” the relative added.
A video that accompanied the report showed the woman lying on what appeared to be a hospital bed with severe burn injuries on her chest, face, and back.
