Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has offered Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz a short-term deal as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former coach of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran will lead Ghana’s campaign at the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Queiroz boasts extensive World Cup experience. He led South Africa to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, guided Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.

He has also held coaching roles in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, and is expected to bring his wealth of experience to Ghana’s World Cup campaign.
According to Sporty FM, the contract details include the following:
Four-month contract: The interim deal is designed to assess Queiroz’s performance at the World Cup before offering a long-term contract. This approach also prevents situations where coaches who are dismissed prematurely receive large compensation packages that burden the country.
Salary negotiations: The FA negotiated Queiroz’s initial $200,000-per-month salary expectation down to about $100,000 per month. Talks are ongoing to finalize the payment terms.
Contract review after the World Cup: Given the backlash the GFA has faced over the team’s performances at major tournaments, this precautionary approach will allow the association to evaluate Queiroz’s style of play and his ability to manage the dressing room before making a long-term commitment.
Technical assistants: Queiroz is expected to bring four additional technical assistants to support him. This complicates the situation for the current Black Stars technical staff who worked under Otto Addo.
