A private legal practitioner, Kwasi Gyamfi Boadu, has stated that pastors may face legal actions if their public prophecies result in tangible harm to individuals or couples.

According to a report by adomonline.com on April 15, 2026, Boadu explained that while prophecies form part of religious practice, it crosses into legal territory when it leads to real damage.

“If a pastor’s pronouncement leads to someone losing a job, relationship, reputation, or anything of value, the affected person has grounds to sue for defamation or damages,” he said.

His comments follow a recent incident in which a pastor publicly prophesied in church that a man’s partner was romantically involved with two other ministers, a claim made before the entire congregation and described as deeply embarrassing.

Prophecy without accountability is national deception

Boadu stressed that the central legal issue is not the prophecy itself, but the consequences that arise from it.

“The law recognises the right to freedom of worship, but that right does not protect statements that injure another person’s livelihood or social standing,” he noted.

He added that the law does not concern itself with spiritual matters, but rather the real-world effects of such pronouncements.

Boadu, therefore, urged Ghanaians to be mindful of the churches they attend to avoid situations where public prophecies could lead to personal or social harm.
