Laporta clashes with UEFA official after Barcelona's Champions League elimination

Tensions boiled over at the Metropolitano as Joan Laporta was involved in a heated exchange with UEFA director of football Giorgio Marchetti following FC Barcelona’s elimination to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Barcelona crashed out 3-2 on aggregate despite winning 2-1 in Madrid on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The Catalans produced a stunning early comeback, with goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres wiping out Atlético’s 2-0 first-leg advantage inside 25 minutes.

However, a crucial strike from Ademola Lookman restored Atlético’s aggregate lead, which they held onto until the final whistle.

The tie, however, has been overshadowed by major refereeing controversies across both legs, the root of Barcelona’s anger. In the first leg, the club were left furious after a handball incident inside Atlético’s box was not punished, despite appeals and VAR checks.

In the return leg, further frustration followed as another penalty appeal involving Dani Olmo was waved away, while Barcelona also saw key decisions, including dismissals in both matches, go against them.

According to reports, Laporta confronted Marchetti after the final whistle, expressing what the club internally views as “refereeing disrespect” throughout the tie.

The Barcelona hierarchy believe the decisions were not isolated incidents but part of a worrying pattern that undermines the club’s stature in European football.

Players also echoed that frustration. Though absent, Raphinha described the officiating as a “robbery,” underlining the depth of anger within the squad.
