Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko has assured teachers that payment of their salary arrears will begin in May, following directives from the finance minister to complete the necessary processes.
Speaking to teachers after their demonstration in Accra on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Ampem Nyarko explained that the Controller and Accountant-General has been instructed to commence disbursements.
“Even though the finance minister is out of town, he instructed me to conclude the processes, and I have written to the Controller to begin payment of your arrears. That payment will start from May,” he is quoted to have said in an adomonline.com report on April 16, 2026.
He further outlined a phased plan to clear the arrears, assuring teachers that payments will be made in batches over the coming months.
“In May, you will receive four months of arrears; in June, another four months; and in July, an additional four months until the payments are fully settled,” he added.
Unpaid teachers begin massive protests April 15
The announcement follows a protest by teachers over delays in salary payments; some spanning up to 17 months, as well as, concerns about delays in the issuance of staff identification numbers.
The teachers have been demanding urgent government intervention to resolve the situation.
