Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin
The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has condemned comments made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding a Circuit Court judge’s ruling.
Afenyo-Markin had reacted to the remand of Abubakar Yakubu, the Sunyani East Communication Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was ordered to spend two weeks in custody by an Accra Circuit Court.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the decision, the Minority Leader described the judge’s conduct as improper and declared, “That judge, the Circuit Court judge, shame on him. He has brought a big shame onto himself and the judiciary.”
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 18, 2026, Bediako rebuked the Minority Leader’s remarks, calling them inappropriate and disrespectful.
“With the greatest of respect, it’s a shame. I have so much respect and regard for the Minority Leader, but the way he went about this matter is very shameful,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said during the interview.
'Please apply your legal brain, common sense' - Afenyo-Markin to judges
The Akwatia MP defended the judge’s ruling, insisting that the decision was lawful and proper.
He further justified the arrest of Abubakar Yakubu, noting that similar actions had been taken under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Yakubu was arrested on Monday, April 13, 2026, as part of investigations into alleged offensive conduct, false publication, and circulation of statements likely to incite fear and panic.
Though formal charges are yet to be announced, reports suggest the arrest may be linked to threats directed at a judge at the Adentan Circuit Court.
