Tears flow as Atletico Madrid lose Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad

It was an emotional night for Atlético Madrid players and fans after they lost the 2026 Spanish Copa del Rey final on penalties to Real Sociedad on April 18, 2026.

Real Sociedad started the game strongly, with Ander Barrenetxea scoring in the first minute to put pressure on their opponents.

Atletico Madrid responded in the 19th minute as Ademola Lookman levelled the score with a brilliant strike and continued pushing for the lead.

Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s advantage before halftime, but Julián Álvarez equalised in the 83rd minute to send the game into extra time. The score remained 2-2 after extra time, with Atlético eventually losing 4-3 on penalties.

It was a huge disappointment for the Spanish side, who have now gone five consecutive seasons without a trophy, casting a shadow over Diego Simeone’s team.

After the game, Atlético Madrid players, including captain Koke, Giuliano Simeone, Julián Álvarez, and others, were seen in tears.

Among the fans, emotions ran even higher, with many visibly breaking down as they struggled to come to terms with the defeat.

The club, which eliminated FC Barcelona earlier in the competition, had been tipped as favourites but failed to live up to expectations.

They must now turn their focus to the UEFA Champions League, where they face Arsenal in the semi-final.
