Foreign Affairs Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa met Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares Bueno
Ghana has taken a significant step toward deepening bilateral relations with Spain following high-level discussions between the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares Bueno, in Barcelona.
The meeting, held on Friday, April 17, 2026, focused on strengthening cooperation across key sectors, including migration, maritime security, and labour mobility.
During the talks, Ablakwa commended the Spanish government for what he described as a “progressive and humane” immigration policy aimed at regularising the status of approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants.

“This flagship policy by the Government of Spain demonstrates a strong commitment to human dignity, inclusion and economic opportunity for migrants,” he stated.
The policy, which is being implemented from April 16 to the end of June 2026, seeks to grant legal status to eligible migrants who have lived in Spain for at least five months before December 31, 2025, while also providing access to employment and social protections.
Ablakwa noted that beyond legalisation, the initiative promotes skills development and multicultural integration.
“This initiative not only guarantees legal status and jobs, but also promotes skills development and fosters multicultural harmony,” he added.
He further highlighted measures put in place by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support Ghanaian migrants who wish to benefit from the programme.
“We are committed to assisting our citizens with the necessary official documentation to enable them take full advantage of this opportunity,” he assured.
