Ghana is set to draw lessons from Zambia’s approach to reducing energy losses and improving efficiency in power distribution, the Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has said.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 20, 2026, George highlighted Zambia’s success in deploying technology to minimise waste within its energy grid, describing it as a model worth emulating.

He noted that inefficiencies in Ghana’s energy sector remain a major challenge, with distribution losses estimated at nearly 30 percent, undermining revenue and overall system performance.

In contrast, Zambia has managed to ensure that a greater share of generated power is paid for and effectively utilised by industry.

“Zambia is doing a lot in managing waste in their energy grid, which is one of Ghana’s biggest challenges. They have deployed technology that makes their grid more efficient, ensuring that most of the energy produced is paid for and used productively,” he explained.

George emphasised that collaboration between Ghana and Zambia would be mutually beneficial, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and joint problem-solving in the energy sector.

He further stressed the need for Ghana to adopt innovative technological solutions to tackle distribution losses and improve efficiency, adding that Zambia’s experience offers valuable insights as electricity demand continues to rise.
